8a Firms Assisting with FEMA Disaster Recovery

8a firms are often best equipped to help their neighbors when national disasters hit. This is because the 8a certified company has the ability to receive sole source contracts up to $4.5 million dollars. Due to the much faster processing time of a sole source contracts relief can then get to the victims faster. FEMA in recent years is doing a better job of following federal guidelines for using local businesses to help stimulate those local afflicted economies. For example: “Local, small and minority-owned businesses are playing a critical role in rebuilding the Gulf Coast,” said Acting FEMA Director David Paulison. “Getting local businesses more heavily involved in the long-term recovery efforts will also contribute to the overall economic recovery of the region.”

Another Example in 2011 disaster declarations were issues for 18 North Carolina counties after the state was devastated by tornados, FEMA worked “to make sure 90 percent of federal contracting dollars were awarded to local businesses in North Carolina.” FEMA is making moves to ensure that “local contractors” in areas affected by presidentially declared disasters or emergencies receive the preferences they are allotted under government regulation. The average Federal Spending on disasters is $11.5 Billion Annually. These disasters are usually spread evenly throughout the country with some major anomalous events.
